Botswana vs. Tanzania: Which First Safari Is Right for You?

Okavango Delta

Who will love each?

Botswana

  • You want boat & mokoro angles and elephant-packed riverfronts.
  • You prefer lower vehicle density in private concessions.
  • You don’t mind fly-in logistics and a higher budget in peak months.

Tanzania

  • You want Migration action (calving or river crossings) plus year-round megafauna.
  • You like range of budgets from value to ultra-luxury.
  • You want iconic one-offs: Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro backdrops, and Indian Ocean add-ons.

Seasonality at a glance

Botswana (Okavango/Moremi/Chobe)

  • Why the paradox? The Delta floods during the dry season: floodwaters arriving from Angola swell channels and lagoons mid-year, pulling game to permanent water.
  • Prime window: June–October for concentrated sightings, mixed land-and-water activities, and cool mornings.
  • Chobe riverfront: Elephants and buffalo stack along the river in the dry months, with superb boat photography.
  • Green season (Nov–Mar): Lower rates, dramatic storms, superb birding; some areas wetter and access-dependent.

Tanzania (Serengeti/Ngorongoro/Nyerere)

  • Two “bests”:
    • Dec–MarCalving on the southern Serengeti/Ndutu plains (predator action + dramatic weather).
    • Jul–OctMara River crossings in the far north (Kogatende/Lamayi; movement varies year to year).
  • Classic dry season: Late Jun–Oct across northern parks for easy visibility and comfortable temps.
  • Green months: Nov and Apr–May bring moody skies, fewer vehicles, and excellent birding.
  • Boating & walking: Uniquely strong in Nyerere (Selous) on the Rufiji system; otherwise, national parks are mostly day-drive only.

Activities & rules (plain-English)

  • Botswana: What you can do depends on where you stay. In national parks like Chobe/Moremi it’s on-road game drives only and no night drives. In private concessions of the Delta you can usually go off-road, enjoy night drives, and mix walking with mokoro/boating.
  • Tanzania: In national parks, expect daytime game drives and set gate hours; night drives are generally not permitted. Boating is a standout in Nyerere; several operators offer guided walks there and in select areas under license.

Logistics & routing tips

  • Botswana: Most safaris fly via Maun (or Kasane) and continue by light aircraft into camps; many itineraries pair a water-camp with a land-camp to cover both modes.
  • Tanzania: Most trips start at Kilimanjaro (JRO) near Arusha. Choose fly-ins to Serengeti airstrips for time efficiency or do a road circuit (Tarangire → Ngorongoro → Serengeti). For crossings, aim for northern Serengeti in Jul–Oct; for calving, target Ndutu in Jan–Feb.

Cost snapshot (directional)

  • Botswana peaks among Africa’s pricier destinations in dry season—especially fly-in Delta concessions.
  • Tanzania spans budget to ultra-luxury, so it’s often friendlier for first-timers watching spend (especially outside crossing weeks and holidays).

Sample first-timer routes (7–9 nights)

Botswana (fly-in Delta + Chobe)

  • 3–4 nights private Delta concession (mix land/water) → 3 nights Chobe riverfront (boat + game drives).

Tanzania (northern circuit)

  • 1 night Arusha buffer → 2 nights Tarangire (or Manyara add-on) → 2 nights Ngorongoro area → 3–4 nights Serengeti (south for Jan–Feb calving; north for Jul–Oct crossings).
