From the vast grain fields of the Free State to the serene wetlands of the Western Cape and the expansive bushveld, this region provides a magnificent backdrop for a truly exhilarating feathered pursuit.
At Infinite Safaris, we invite you to discover the dynamic world of wing shooting, where precision, quick reflexes, and the thrill of the chase come alive under the African sky.
Southern Africa’s unique climate and varied topography create ideal habitats for an incredible array of game bird species. This ensures not only high populations but also diverse hunting experiences, ranging from high-volume dove shooting to challenging walked-up hunts for francolins. The region is known for:
While wing shooting opportunities exist across various Southern African countries, South Africa is particularly renowned, with several provinces offering exceptional experiences:
Free State & Northern Cape (Home to Loskop Farm)
These provinces, including the area surrounding our Loskop Farm near Kimberley, are famed for their extensive farmlands. These provide ideal feeding grounds for enormous flocks of doves, pigeons, and geese, making them prime locations for high-volume pass shooting over bait fields or water. The open terrain also offers excellent walked-up opportunities for spurfowl and francolins.
The method of hunting is often dictated by the bird species and terrain:

Here is a list of the most asked questions.
May–Aug/Sept is the prime window for most provinces: cold fronts move ducks and geese, and upland birds hold well in cooler grass. Pigeons & doves often peak Feb–May around crop harvests. Exact opening/closing dates and bag limits are gazetted annually per province, and we’ll confirm the current notice and licences for your hunt.
Absolutely, yes.
You can easily combine a wingshooting experience with any of our hunting safaris. Typically, guests enjoy a 5–7 day plains game or dangerous game hunt, followed by a 2–3 day wingshooting adventure before heading home.
If you prefer, we can also arrange the wingshooting before your main safari. Everything is fully customizable, and we’re happy to put together a tailor-made package that suits your ideal adventure.
We tailor methods to species and conditions:
Pass-shooting/flightlines over water or crops (doves, pigeons, geese).
Decoying ducks/geese from concealed blinds at first light.
Walked-up hunts for francolin/spurfowl/guineafowl (often with dogs).
Typical day: pre-dawn coffee → waterfowl flight over pans/dams → brunch & rest → afternoon pigeons/doves or an upland walk-up → sundowners and bird talk by the fire.
Licences & limits: We arrange the correct provincial hunting licence and brief you on the current bag limits for your district.
Firearms: Bring your own (temporary import via SAPS 520) or use our quality rentals.
Ammunition (guide): Doves/pigeons #7–7½, ducks #4–6, geese #2–BB (use non-lead where required near wetlands).
Clothing & kit: Neutral layers, broken-in boots, cap/hat, eye & ear protection, gloves, shell bag/vest; upland days benefit from breathable long pants and a light rain layer.
Ethics: We practice fair chase, respect seasons and quotas, and support habitat management—your hunt helps fund local conservation and communities.
